Tape-In Extensions Aftercare: How to Wash, Dry and Store Your Set

The Truly Seamless double-sided method — four steps: section, place, press and seal, blend. Each weft is 3 inches wide by 0.5 inches tall; two side by side give 6 inches of coverage.

Good tape-in extensions aftercare comes down to a handful of small habits. Wash gently, dry carefully, brush the right way, and store the hair flat. None of it is difficult, yet each step protects the tape and keeps the hair soft. This guide walks through the routine day by day.

Tape-in extensions aftercare for the first 48 hours

Strong tape-in extensions aftercare begins on day one. The first two days matter because the tape is still settling. Heat and moisture can loosen a fresh bond, so give it time. Your stylist may offer their own timing, and it is wise to follow it. Otherwise, a good rule is to wait at least 48 hours before the first wash.

During that window, skip steam rooms, hot yoga and long, hot showers. Keep your hair pulled back loosely, and avoid tight elastics. In addition, sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase if you can. It reduces friction while the weft finds its place.

How to wash your set

Washing is where most mistakes happen. Use a sulfate-free shampoo, and keep the water lukewarm. Hot water can soften the tape over time, so it is better avoided.

  1. Detangle first, working from the ends upward.
  2. Wet hair with the shower pointed down the length, not against it.
  3. Apply shampoo to the scalp and let it run down the lengths. Do not scrub the wefts.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Conditioner needs care, too. Apply it to the mid-lengths and ends only, and keep oil-based products away from the attachment points. Oils soften adhesive, so they can shorten wear. In short, tape-in extensions aftercare protects the tape as much as the hair. Our guide to how long tape-in extensions last explains what else changes the wear window.

Drying without stress on the tape

Air-dry whenever possible. Blot with a soft towel instead of rubbing, because friction tangles the hair around the wefts. Then let the hair dry fully before you brush or style it.

If you need a blow dryer, use a low-to-medium heat setting and keep the nozzle moving. Point it along the hair, away from the tape. The American Academy of Dermatology’s tips for weaves and extensions also stress gentle handling and regular breaks between styles. Never go to bed with wet hair, since damp wefts twist and mat overnight.

Brushing and daily care

Use a soft, loop-style or wet brush. Hold the hair just above the weft with one hand, then brush from the ends up toward the top. This way, the brush never tugs on the bond. Brush two or three times a day, and always before bed.

For sleep, a loose braid or low ponytail keeps hair from knotting. As a result, mornings are quicker, and the wefts stay flat. Plain, soft scrunchies work better than tight elastics.

Storing your set between wears

Tape-in extensions aftercare does not stop when the hair comes out. A Truly Seamless set can be reused two or three times with proper care, so storage matters. Remove old tape residue with a suitable remover, then wash and dry the hair completely. After that, lay the wefts flat on a clean surface.

Store them flat in a box or a zip bag, with the tape sides kept apart. Fresh tape comes from a Re-Tape Kit, which lets you refit the same hair for the next wear. Each weft is 3 inches by half an inch, and two sit side by side, so the tabs are simple to line up when you reapply.

Small habits that help

Finally, a few extra habits round out your tape-in extensions aftercare routine and go a long way. Keep hairspray and styling oils away from the tape. Take care with sunscreen near the attachment points. Schedule your move-up appointments on time, rather than stretching the wear. For fine hair, see our tips on tape-in extensions for fine hair.

If anything feels tight, itchy or sore, call your stylist right away. Comfort should always come first.
